Begin this spring season providing your lawn with the nutrients it needs by mulching. Using a mulching lawn mower allows you to leave tiny grass clippings on your lawn that decreases thatch, adds nitrogen, and makes great compost.

In case you are wondering, “what is thatch”, thatch is the alive and dead grass stems you find in between where the grass begins growing from underneath the ground to the very top of the grass leaves. So why would you want to decrease thatch? If thatch grows beyond ½ inches, not enough nitrogen and water can easily move throughout the soil. The more obvious consequences of thatch are dry spots among your lawn, an inconsistent texture among the soil, and problems with insects and diseases running rampant in your lawn.

We recommend a few tips that are sure to prevent thatch. First, water your lawn infrequently but deeply, mow your grass at the proper height for the type of grass growing in your lawn, immediately treat diseases and insect problems, and do not over-fertilize. One last thought, one of the best ways to decrease thatching is to use a mulching mower. Keep the grass nutrients on your lawn by using a mulching lawn mower!
