Mowing can become an annoying chore to keep up with, especially when the weather is as unpredictable as it has been this summer. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you keep your lawn looking healthy this summer.

  1. Mow your lawn when it is dry. You may be tempted to cut your grass despite the fact that it rained an hour ago. When wet grass is cut this spreads fungi and weeds. However this is very unlikely to happen if you wait to mow your lawn until it is dry.
  2. Let your grass grow! You may think short grass is more attractive, but in the long run, it is better to allow your lawn to grow to 2-3 inches in length. Then you should only cut the top 1/3 of the grass blade’s length. If you begin to pick up the habit of mowing too soon, this will damage your lawn in the long run. Scalping a lawn can make it susceptible to parasites and diseases and produces an overall unhealthy look.
  3. Keep your blades sharp. You want to cut your grass, not hack it down. Keeping your mower blades sharp will ensure you are cutting your grass and will also make it easier to mow. Don’t forget to leave the grass clippings. This provides necessary nutrients to the lawn.
