How many of you made a New Year’s resolution last night? Now how many of you made a New Year’s resolution to make your lawn look better than ever before? It is not too late to make a 2012 promise to your lawn!

The most important thing to do is properly mow – the whole season; not just the spring . If this is all you focused on this year then this would be a fabulous start.

The length of your lawn is essential. You want to make sure that you are setting your mower height so that it does not cut your grass blades too short. You want to mow tall so that your blades are three inches all year round. This will leave you with a nice turf and a healthy soil.

How many of you remember to sharpen your mower blade? If you have a smaller lawn, then you will most likely only have to sharpen your blade once each season. You need to sharpen your blade so that your grass blades do not rip and become susceptible to disease. To prevent your blade from dulling you can take the blade to a local small engine shop and pay about $15 to have them sharpen it for you. You can also sharpen it yourself if you have a file. First remove the nut that keeps the blade against the deck and then remove the blade. Then file the blade, making sure you follow the angle of the cutting edge of your blade.

Now, make sure you mow on a consistent basis. Think of it as a workout, a chance to catch up on humming your favorite tunes, or simply remember the reason you want to mow regularly is so you do not stress out your lawn. If you let the lawn grow out of control and then cut it, then this can cause the roots of your turf to thin.

Remember, this is the first step to having a beautiful lawn in 2012. Make this your 2012 lawn promise and stay tuned for more ideas on how to have the best lawn yet this year!
