Lawn Care

  • How much should I water my lawn?

For lawns in the St. Louis region, we recommend watering anywhere from 1 to 1.5 inches per week. This is especially important during extreme times of heat and drought seasons. However, for Zoysia and Bermuda grass, you only need to water .5 inches per week.

Knowing the best time and frequency for watering your lawn is also essential. It is best to water during the early times of the day from 6 to 8 a.m. You are more likely to retain the most water in the soil if watering at this time. Keep in mind that it is better for the ground to be watered for longer periods of time, about three times each week, rather than watering a few minutes daily.
  • What does your mowing service include?

Our mowing service consists of cutting, as well as trimming of the lawn perimeter and all necessary locations of your lawn. Upon completion, we blow away all debris. We offer additional services, such as edging, for an additional cost.
  • How often should my lawn be fertilized?

Fertilizing your lawn will keep the grass a healthy length, color, vigor, and hardness. How often you fertilize depends on the level of fertilizing you want to do within each application. One option is to schedule applications 4-6 times per year. Another option is to fertilize the lawn once a year, about a month before the mowing season begins.
  • When do I need a fertilizer put on the lawn?

Usually we recommend our customers begin fertilizing thirty days before you begin the mowing season. Plan on beginning your fertilizing at the early onset of March, when the weather becomes warmer. Also, it is extremely important to start off your fertilizing treatment slowly so that your lawn is receiving the nutrients slowly without getting dried out. Once the fertilizing treatment begins, it is essential to water your lawn regularly to prevent burning and drying out of your grass.
  • Why do I need fertilizer?

Fertilizer is a key component to maintaining a healthy lawn. Fertilizer keeps your lawn free of weeds and helps keep your grass and roots strong and healthy.
  • How tall should I let my grass grow?

In the warmer season, your lawn should be mowed once it reaches 2.5 inches in height. When temperatures cool, it is appropriate for your lawn to grow to three inches before cutting the lawn. If you are mowing more than one-third of your grass’s length at any given time, it is time to mow your lawn more often!
  • Is it harmful for your grass to get long before cutting it?

Letting your grass grow too long is very unhealthy for the lawn because it promotes thatch, as well as dry spots in your lawn.  It is best not to let your grass grow longer than 2.5 to 3 inches and to maintain this length by cutting it on a weekly basis. Make sure you are mowing your lawn on a regular basis once the grass starts to grow.

  • What is pruning and is this something you do?

Pruning is when certain parts of a plant, shrub, or tree are removed. Pruning is a necessary practice because it makes your plants stronger, healthier, and more attractive. This is a service we offer for small and large plants, shrubs, and trees.
  • Do you remove trees, shrubs, or other plants?

We remove trees, shrubs, bushes, plants, weeds, and debris. If you are unsure of what needs to be removed, then we can provide suggestions for how to clean-up your property without making it look completely bare.

Mulch & Garden

  • What type of mulch should I use?

There two basic types of mulches. If you decide to use organic mulch, this will improve your soil’s fertility. Organic mulches are made from bark, leaves, grass clippings, or wood chips. If you are looking to buy dyed mulch, then keep in mind that the dye can bleed off of the mulch and stain your sidewalks, skin, or clothes. Organic mulch is a higher maintenance option. As time goes by, organic mulch decomposes into the ground. It will need to be replenished every year in order to keep it looking nice. Organic mulch attracts insects such as slugs and cutworms, so you might see birds digging around in your mulch.

Another option to consider is inorganic mulch, such as gravel or pebbles. One of the greatest benefits of inorganic mulch is that it is low maintenance. It does not attract insects or animals and does not decompose. Once gravel is laid in your garden bed, it is there forever unless you decide to have someone dig it out and haul it away.
  • Why should I use mulch in my garden bed?

If you decide to use mulch in your garden beds, it is best to first lay down landscape fabric. While mulch helps reduce weed growth, landscape fabric prevents most weeds from even growing. Fabric will also work with the mulch to maintain a consistent temperature and moist texture in the soil. After laying down the fabric and mulch, you will immediately notice the improvement in the overall beauty and look of your yard. Most people prefer to use mulch in their garden beds and around trees.

  • How often should I get my gutters cleaned?

How often you need your gutters cleaned depends on a few factors. If you have trees near your house, then chances are you get a lot of leaves and debris in your gutters. In this case, you need to have your gutters cleaned at least two times each year. If there are no trees around your property, then cleaning your gutters once a year should be sufficient. Even if you have gutter guards installed, you will still need your gutters cleaned once a year.
